In an effort to bring about peace in Syria, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s appointment as president.
Less than two months after spearheading a campaign that overthrew Bashar Assad, Sharaa was proclaimed president for a transitional period on Wednesday.
In addition, he was given the authority to suspend the Syrian constitution and establish a provisional legislative body for a transitional time.
“During this transitional period, we welcome Ahmed Al-Sharaa as President of the Syrian Arab Republic and hope that the new leadership can bring peace, progress, and prosperity to the Syrian people,” Sharif said on X.
Sharaa said on Thursday that he would establish an inclusive transitional administration that would represent a variety of communities. This government would establish institutions and rule the nation until free and fair elections could be held.
He was speaking to the country for the first time since the military command that overthrew Assad in a lightning strike last year named him president.
Following 13 years of civil war, the party that spearheaded the offensive, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, has subsequently established an interim government that has welcomed a constant flow of high-ranking Western and Arab diplomatic delegations eager to assist in stabilising the nation.
