Tech billionaire Elon Musk has made a massive bid to acquire OpenAI, reportedly offering a staggering $97.4 billion through his special group to take control of the company. This move comes after Musk filed a lawsuit to prevent OpenAI from transitioning into a for-profit entity.
Musk originally co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but parted ways in 2019. Later, in 2023, he launched his own artificial intelligence company, xAI, to compete in the growing AI industry. Some reports suggest this latest bid could further escalate his ongoing conflict with OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, regarding the company’s future direction.
Following Musk’s offer, Sam Altman hit back with a sarcastic response on X, saying:
❝ No thanks, but if you’d like, we’d gladly buy X for $9.74 billion! ❞
Musk, however, remains firm in his vision for OpenAI. He believes the company should return to its original mission—prioritizing safety and transparency in AI development.
