AB de Villiers announces comeback to cricket after four-year hiatus

South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has confirmed his return to the sport, announcing that he is fully prepared to play for his team once again. The renowned right-handed batsman revealed that he will participate in the 2025 World Championship of Legends, which is scheduled to take place in July.

De Villiers, who retired from international cricket in 2018 after an illustrious career that spanned from 2004 to 2018, played 114 Test matches, 228 One Day Internationals, and 78 T20Is. Despite his retirement from international cricket, he continued to showcase his skills in the IPL until 2021.

Reflecting on his return, de Villiers shared, “Four years ago, I retired from all forms of cricket because I didn’t feel the desire to play anymore. However, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game. Now, it feels like a spark has been reignited within me.”

He further added, “So, I’m heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for the World Championship of Legends in July.”
