Nearly 60 health centers and 1.7 million people will be affected by the closure of the USAID health program in Pakistan.
In regions like Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Tharparkar, nearly 2 million people have relied on these facilities, which are now at risk due to funding shortages.
The Federal Ministry of Health officially halted these programs on June 30, 2023, citing financial constraints and the need for new policies.
The abrupt closure of such programs is not new. In the past, similar USAID-funded projects were discontinued, causing disruptions in essential healthcare services. A notable example is the termination of the Palestinian Health Capacity Project, which affected over 120,000 patients and 100,000 health workers, cutting off access to specialized medical care.
The shutdown of these facilities in Pakistan threatens both immediate and long-term healthcare. Vulnerable communities, who depend on these services for critical medical assistance, may now face severe health disparities.
Authorities are exploring solutions to address funding gaps and keep essential healthcare services operational. The Economic Coordination Committee and other stakeholders are in discussions to find sustainable alternatives. However, without urgent action and financial support, healthcare access will become increasingly limited, putting millions at risk.
The situation highlights the pressing need for continued investment in healthcare programs to safeguard the well-being of affected communities.
